MERV = 'Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value' this is used to rate the overall effectiveness of an Air Filter. Below you will find a table that measures the MERV strength and tells you the Application of each unit's effectiveness. In general an Air Filter with a higher MERV Rating is more effective and has a broader application, but most residential homes will find the best use from an air filter between the 5-13 MERV rating.

When we got our new HVAC system I needed to search for a new size air filter. The system took a rather strange size and I could not find it in my local store. I am thankful to be able to find these Honeywell furnace filters as the hardware store near me no longer sale them. They now sale their own (generic) brand. Not that their product is insufficient but Honeywell is well known product that has been around for many years and I rather go with what I know rather than the unknown that must prove itself...
